Sign Making Workshop

Saturday, September 14th, 2019

10am to 12pm, $50 + $10 for materials = $60

If you've been to my house you've seen the giant butterfly and other signs fixed to my fence and door. Many people have requested that I create a workshop so they can make their own signs. Well, here it is! Signs can be put in a window, on a door, fence or yard. Make them to bring attention to the issues you care about: a candidate, slowing traffic down your street, picking up litter, etc...

We will start with a cardboard mock-up then transfer our designs to wood and paint them. If you have extra wood scraps or house paint you would like to contribute let me know. I always strive to create with used materials for low impact on the environment.

Location: I am a teaching artist, all sessions will take place in my Kensington, Brooklyn studio on East 7th Street between Church and Beverly, close to the B103, F/G, Q/B

About me: I have been an exhibiting artist in New York City for twenty-six years. I have had seven solo exhibitions and my work has been part of over thirty group exhibits at numerous venues in New York including: Art in General, PS122, HEREart, Momenta, NURTUREart, Ethan Cohen Gallery, Heskin Contemporary and Robert Mann Gallery. I have received several grants and awards including a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. I have made art for three New York Park’s Department playgrounds. I am also a community organizer and make art to advocate for social and environmental rights. I have taught at Alfred University, Philbrook Museum, and Brooklyn Apple Academy.

I earned an MFA from Alfred University in Alfred, NY in 2004. I received a BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, NY in 1992. You can see my playground art at J.J. Byrne Playground and Underhill Playground both in Brooklyn. I was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I live in Kensington Brooklyn with my partner (artist, illustrator, graphic novelist) Gideon Kendall and our eleven year old son Milo.
